Puppy Skills Foundation (3-8 months of age)

If you have just picked up your new puppy and you need help with puppy basics like crate training and house breaking, want to avoid or stop unwanted behaviours like chewing and mouthing, and want to ensure they have the skills they need to be well-mannered throughout their life, then this is your starting point. Puppy training is all about setting your puppy up for success by preventing unwanted behaviours from developing and becoming future problems.

Adult Skills Foundation (9 months of age or older)

If you have an older puppy who has already done the Puppy Skills Foundation course or perhaps a puppy class with another trainer and you want to build on that skill set, then this one is for you. You will learn how to teach your dog more advanced skills and behaviours, how to work around life’s many distractions, and to experience the freedom that comes without a leash. Be able to take your dog everywhere you go with confidence!

Training methods and philosophy

At K911, we employ balanced training methods. What that means is that we use food, toys, and social praise to reinforce the behaviours we want to encourage. That is the foundation of the work. As well, we use a variety of training collars and tools to help motivate behaviours we want and to discourage behaviours that are undesirable or unacceptable.

  • K911 has developed a training system over 20 years that has proven to be effective in tackling even the most severe behavioural issues. Many of our clients come to us after having seen multiple dog trainers in the past. Our goal is to be last trainer you ever need.

  • While positive reinforcement is the overwhelming foundation of any good training plan, it is only part of the equation. Negative reinforcement is very effective in shaping new behaviours, while being minimally invasive, and positive punishment is necessary to change behaviours in some dogs. For example, proofing a recall with a prey-driven husky or to deter an aggressive reaction with a doberman who is intrinsically motivated to react.

Using markers, punishment is administered at the minimal effective dose, based on the individual dog. This is a necessary step in resolving reactive and aggressive responses.

  • Absolutely. We start in your home not only because it’s convenient for you, but because it’s easier to teach new behaviours in a low-distraction environment. As soon as both you and your dog have the skills to move into real world settings, we can add more difficulty by working in parks or other public spaces.

  • All training programs are tailored to you and your dog, working within a proven system. If you have specific questions or needs, please ask. We encourage you to ask as many questions as you can to make sure we’re the right fit for you and there’s no obligation to sign up until you’re satisfied with the answers.
